Arusberita.id – Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (OIKN) memastikan perusahaan-perusahaan yang turut andil menghijaukan IKN Nusantara akan diberikan fasilitas pengurangan pajak hingga 200 persen.
Hal itu disampaikan Direktur Pengembangan Pemanfaatan Kehutanan dan Sumber Daya Air OIKN Pungky Widiaryanto dalam konsultasi publik Rencana Induk pengelolaan Keanekaragaman hayati IKN, secara virtual, Rabu (27/12/2023).
Pungky menjelaskan, tercatat hutan di IKN hanya 16 persen dari total luas 252 ribu hektare. Hal itu dikarenakan laju deforestasi yang cukup tinggi yakni 1.000 hektare per tahun.Maka dari itu, OIKN akan membangun kawasan hijau atau lindung seluas 177 ribu hektare.
Dari luas tersebut, terdiri dari 40 ribu hektare untuk hutan sekunder, 2.000 hektare hutan mangrove, 55 ribu hektare hutan industri, dan 80 ribu hektare lainnya digunakan sebagai pertanian, tambang, hingga kebun sawit.
Lebih lanjut, Pungky mencontohkan, jika ada perusahaan ingin melakukan rehabilitasi di 2.000 hektare, misalnya perusahaan tersebut menghabiskan Rp100 miliar. Maka tax deduction untuk perusahaan itu bisa diklaim dua kali lipatnya.
“Ini sebagai contoh untuk insentif-insentif dalam rangka perbaikan hutan di IKN Nusantara,” ujarnya Pungky.
2 Skema Lain
Adapun selain memberikan tax deduction, OIKN juga memiliki dua skema lain yang akan dilakukan guna merehabilitasi kawasan hutan di IKN.
Pertama, menggunakan Anggaran Pendapatan dan Belanja Negara (APBN). Menurutnya, penggunaan APBN dapar dilakukan oleh OIKN, Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan (KLHK), hingga pemerintah daerah setempat.Kedua, kemitraan.
Untuk skema ini, OIKN akan menyediakan lahan untuk para perusahaan yang memiliki kewajiban menghijaukan kawasan hutan di IKN.
“Contohnya, kewajiban reklamasi atau rehabilitasi dalam rangka kewajiban perusahaan tersebut karena telah menggunakan kawasan hutan untuk pertambangan. Jadi, kalau di tambang ada kewajiban satu kali satu, melakukan rehabilitasi di luar area tambang mereka. Itu kita sediakan lahan di IKN Nusantara untuk dilakukan rehabilitasi sebagai kewajiban mereka (perusahaan tambang),” pungkasnya.

Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara (OIKN) mengakui hingga kini masih terdapat kegiatan tambang di wilayah IKN Nusantara di Kalimantan Timur, yang belum dihentikan operasionalnya.
Deputi Bidang Lingkungan Hidup dan Sumber Daya Alam Otorita IKN Myrna Safitri, mengatakan, alasan belum dihentikan kegiatan pertambangan di wilayah IKN lantaran masih ada sekitar 60 izin tambang legal yang masih aktif.
“Kita juga mengakui bahwa masih ada izin-izin aktif. Jadi, dari konsolidasi data yang kami lakukan dalam 6 bulan terakhir ada 60 izin tambang aktif di wilayah IKN,” kata Myrna dalam konsultasi publik Rencana Induk pengelolaan Keanekaragaman hayati IKN, secara virtual, Rabu (27/12/2023).Menurutnya, masih adanya izin pertambangan yang aktif tersebut membuat OIKN dilema, lantaran terdapat hak-hak legal dari pemegang izin pertambangan yang harus dihormati. Namun, disisi yang lain OIKN harus segera menghentikan operasional pertambangan tersebut.
Hal yang menjadi sorotan utama OIKN adalah durasi perizinan pertambangan yang tidak bisa dihentikan begitu saja. Oleh karena itu, pihak OIKN mengeluarkan surat edaran tentang monotarium dan penataan perizinan tambang dan perkebunan. Dalam kaitan itulah kebijakannya jelas, bahwa OIKN tidak menerbitkan izin baru dan tidak memperpanjang izin pertambangan yang ada.
“Dari unit kami sudah banyak sekali melakukan penolakan terhadap permohonan-permohonan untuk perpanjangan izin yang ada untuk sektor pertambangan ini,” ujarnya.
Penghentian Operasional Pertambangan

Lebih lanjut, untuk penanganan penghentian operasional pertambangan yang berizin di wilayah IKN, pihaknya tengah mempersiapkan penyusunan pedoman reklamasi pasca tambang bagi para pemegang izin tambang tersebut.
“Kami juga Tengah mempersiapkan penyusunan pedoman untuk melakukan reklamasi yang dihadapkan. Nanti tahun depan pemegang pemegang izin aktif juga dilakukan upaya khusus agar mereka melakukan reklamasi pasca tambangnya dengan baik,” ujarnya.
Adapun terkait kegiatan tambang ilegal di wilayah IKN Nusantara, OIKN telah membentuk Satuan Tugas (Satgas) untuk penanggulangan aktivitas tambang ilegal, yang terdiri dari Aparat penegak hukum, Kementerian dan lembaga seperti KLHK dan Kementerian ESDM, dinas- dinas terkait di Kalimantan Timur, hingga TNI, Polda, dan Kejaksaan Tinggi.
“Keberadaan aktivitas ilegal di dalam kegiatan pertambangan ini, kami sudah membentuk zat gas untuk penanggulangan aktivitas ilegal ini yang terdiri dari unsur-unsur aparat penegak hukum Kementerian lembaga, KLHK, ESDM dan dinas-dinas terkait di Kalimantan Timur, juga dari TNI dari Polda dan kejaksaan tinggi dan saat ini kegiatan-kegiatan ilegal itu sudah banyak juga yang dilakukan penertiban dan yang masuk ke dalam proses hukum,” pungkasnya.

Они продали квартиру и с бизнеса вложили деньги туда, они раньше меня там были. Я вложил 2,3 млн рублей, взятые в кредит в Газпромбанке, их передал Галлямовым лично в руки, так как доверял, они говорили, что откроют счет “Виста”. Мне сказали, что это лучше банка и лучше, чем “недвижку” покупать. Если сколько-то людей созываешь, ты получаешь какие-то проценты и еще растешь. Обещали 30% доходности, якобы идет инвестирование акций — криптой, недвижимостью. Деньги высветились в личном кабинете в евро, потом я узнал, что деньги не настоящие, это информационная система, компьютерная цифра, виртуальные деньги”, — рассказал он. При этом подтверждений передачи денег у Шахмина нет, однако Галлямов признал на допросе у следователя, что получил деньги и внес на счет “Виста”.
Свидетель вывел со счета “Виста”, по его словам, 1 тыс. евро и 50 тыс. рублей. Для платежей предлагали “Пей Про”: мол, не надо волноваться, будем выводить деньги, проходи верификацию. Потом у свидетеля появились сомнения, и он заявил, что хочет вывести деньги. Галлямовы, по его словам, начали всячески откладывать вывод, до тех пор, пока ЦБ не включил “Гермес” в предупредительный список.
Когда начались трудности, хотели через систему “Свифт” вывести, через “Тинькофф” — но это не получилось: “Начали они просить, чтобы никто из клиентов не возмущался, начали говорить о регистрации на криптобирже “Бинанс” для дальнейшего вывода денег. Также я там зарегистрировался, но тоже ничего не получилось”.
После этого Шахмин написал заявление в полицию. Всплывшие в ходе судебного заседания три личных кабинета в “Лайф-из-Гуд” и переводы ему на карту объяснить не смог.
Признанная потерпевшей Дорда была только клиентом “Гермеса”. Подсудимых не знает.
“Узнала о компании в 2016 году при переезде из Москвы во Владимир. Рассказали консультанты Адрианова и Волюшко, которые занимались страхованием жизни. Рассказывали и о ПК “Бест Вей”, но мне это было неинтересно. Адрианова знала, что я продала квартиру и денежки у меня есть. Зная это, консультант целенаправленно решила затащить в компанию “Гермес”. И я стала очередной жертвой. Мне сказали, что Андрианова занималась гипнозом. Отношения дружеские были до 2021 года. Андрианова была вхожа в дом, знакома с мужем. Деньги передавала Андриановой. Было открыто три счета” — рассказала Дорда. Признанная потерпевшей утверждает, что деньги ни разу не снимала.

“Первый договор с “Гермесом” заключила в 2019 году, второй — в 2021 году. Внесла 1 тыс. евро. Договоры скачивала с кабинета, отдала наличными 70 тыс. руб. В личный кабинет сама заходить могла, но переводить не было возможности. Обещали плавающий процент от 20% в год. Второй счет открыла на 1 тыс. евро. Переводила частным лицам небольшие суммы. Деньги на счету появлялись согласно переводам. Без помощи консультанта Духнова выводить не получалось. “Гермес” свои обязательства исполнял, начисляли проценты, ажио брали. Я сама не вникала, но видела, что каждый месяц начисления были. В кабинет заходила раз в месяц. В последний раз в кабинет заходила накануне заявления в органы. Потом его заблокировали”, — говорит она.
“С официальной претензией в “Гермес” обращалась, в поддержку писала. Ответили, что ведутся работы, скоро откроют. Актов сверки с “Гермесом” нет у меня, в гражданско-правовом порядке за возвратом денег не обращалась, ни с какими юристами не общалась. Наткнулась на канал в интернете — там был совет писать заявление в правоохранительные органы”, — добавляет она.
Заявляет общую сумму ущерба в 2 430 430 руб.: “Я взяла кредит, плачу теперь проценты, поэтому эту сумму процентов хочу получить”. При этом в материалах уголовного дела фигурирует сумма в 1 650 000 руб. ущерба.
Шайхуллина поясняет, что “забыла про 800 тыс., так как мне карту перевели 900 тыс. Духнов сказал: “Они у тебя будут лежать, давай обратно внесем”, и я внесла 850 тыс. где-то. Я только что вспомнила про 800 тыс.”.

A kayaker’s leg was amputated during a dramatic, hours-long rescue operation to free him from between rocks on a river in Australia on Saturday, local police said.
The man, a foreign tourist in his 60s, was airlifted to a hospital in Tasmania’s state capital Hobart where he was in a critical condition, police said, adding they were contacting his family.
His 20-hour ordeal began at about 2:30pm on Friday when he became trapped while kayaking through rapids with a group on the Franklin River, police said in a statement.
Authorities received an emergency alert from the man’s smartwatch and dispatched rescue units and paramedics, police said, adding that the area’s remoteness added complexity to the rescue effort.
Set in the rugged landscape of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park in the island state, the powerful 129-kilometer- (80-mile-) long river is a popular spot for kayaking and rafting.
Rescuers made several unsuccessful attempts to extract the man between Friday evening and Saturday morning. When his condition deteriorated after so many hours partially submerged in the water, a decision was made in consultation with the man to amputate his leg, police said.
“This rescue was an extremely challenging and technical operation, and an incredible effort over many hours to save the man’s life,” said Tasmania Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Doug Oosterloo in the statement.
“Every effort was made to extract the man before the difficult decision to amputate his leg.”
Oosterloo also praised the emergency responders. “I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to this operation in the most difficult of circumstances,” he said.

A seaman who fell off a cargo ship survived almost 20 hours at sea before being rescued off Australia’s southeastern coast on Friday, according to emergency services.
The man in his 30s drifted several kilometers in the open sea before he was pulled from the water by a recreational angler, local rescue authorities have said.
He had last been seen aboard Double Delight, a Singapore-flagged bulk carrier, at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday. Details on how he fell from the cargo ship are not immediately available.

The ambulance service in New South Wales state responded to reports that a seaman had been found at 6:20 p.m. Friday, a spokesperson said. They added that it came from Boatrowers Reserve, near Blacksmiths Beach south of the city of Newcastle.
“The patient, a man in his 30s, was conscious, breathing and alert when assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics and treated for suspected hypothermia before he was transported to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition,” NSW Ambulance said in a statement on Friday.
NSW Ambulance paramedic Erin Laughton told CNN’s affiliate 9News that the man was about three-and-a-half kilometers out to sea “waving his arm around” and “bobbing around in the water,” when he was found.
“He was wearing a life jacket, he was conscious, he was able to communicate with us, he was very cold, he was hypothermic and exhausted – he was absolutely exhausted,” she added.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said local officials told them earlier in the day the sailor had reportedly gone overboard the previous evening, about 8 kilometers southeast of Newcastle.
The authority said it had deployed water police and marine rescue units for the rescue, as well as two sea vessels and two helicopters.

Широко разрекламированное МВД разбирательство по поводу «крупнейшей в России пирамиды», связываемое следствием с компаниями «Лайф-из-Гуд», «Гермес Менеджмент» и кооперативом «Бест Вей», вышло на финишную прямую — дело, которое вело ГСУ ГУ МВД России по Санкт-Петербургу и Ленинградской области под кураторством со стороны Следственного департамента МВД, передано сначала в прокуратуру Санкт-Петербурга, а потом в Приморский районный суд города Санкт-Петербурга для рассмотрения по существу — оно начнется 27 февраля.
Со всеми преступлениями и правонарушениями на этом пути, которых наберется не менее двух десятков, следователи МВД смогли выйти на скромную сумму 280 млн ущерба при 221 лице, признанном следствием потерпевшими. Однако у «Гермес Менеджмент» в России много десятков клиентов, которые довольны условиями и получаемым доходом, а у кооператива «Бест Вей», незаконно признанного гражданским ответчиком по делу, — около двух десятков тысяч пайщиков, подавляющее большинство из которых считает следствие МВД нарушителем своих прав, так как в результате действий следствия они лишены возможности приобрести подобранную недвижимость и лишены возможности вернуть вложения в кооператив. Следствие заблокировало счета кооператива и запрещает выплаты с них даже на основании судебных решений, не говоря уже о том, что оно запрещает выплаты налогов и заработной платы сотрудникам аппарата кооператива.
Следствие путем ареста имущества пытается захватить многомиллиардные активы: оно арестовало около 4 млрд рублей на счетах кооператива, пыталось восстановить арест недвижимости кооператива на 8 млрд рублей — теперь эстафету у него приняла прокурорская группа из прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга и прокуратуры Приморского района Санкт-Петербурга. Плюс к этому следствие арестовало на 8 млрд личного имущества обвиняемых.
Фактически речь идет о том, чтобы отдать эти средства в руки группы мошенников, объявивших себя потерпевшими. Следственная группа, судя по всему, находится в сговоре с ними, о чем свидетельствуют, в частности, написанные как под копирку, с одинаковыми орфографическими ошибками заявления от этих «потерпевших» о возмещении морального ущерба по 1 млрд рублей каждое.
В первом, «организационном» заседании Приморского районного суда, предшествующем рассмотрению уголовного дела по существу, упоминание государственного обвинителя из прокуратуры Санкт-Петербурга об этих заявлениях вызвало смех в зале: по судебной практике моральный ущерб на сумму свыше 100 тыс. рублей удовлетворяется судами в исключительных случаях. Но эти юридически ничтожные, по сути, заявления объявляются основанием для ареста имущества.
Жульничество с документами
Поток преступлений и правонарушений следствия не останавливался до самого последнего дня предварительного расследования. Они были совершены при потворстве людей из команды Колокольцева, требовавших результата любой ценой.
1 декабря Приморский районный суд вынужден был признать незаконным фактический отказ кооперативу «Бест Вей» в ознакомлении с материалами уголовного дела, а также признал, что следствие грубо нарушило УПК, не объявив в установленном порядке о завершении следственных действий. Тем самым оно нарушило права всех гражданских истцов и ответчиков на ознакомление с материалами уголовного дела.
При рассмотрении жалобы адвоката кооператива в Приморском районном суде выяснилось, что следственная группа ГСУ, последний год формально руководимая замначальника ГСУ полковником юстиции А.Н. Винокуровым, а фактически, как и раньше, подполковником юстиции Е.А. Сапетовой, подделала документы (Винокуров был назначен в качестве «крыши», «тарана», поскольку ходатайства следственной группы в первый период расследования очень плохо проходили в судах).
Жалоба была подана адвокатом кооператива в июле, много раз ее рассмотрение откладывалось и состоялось в декабре. Уличенная адвокатами кооператива в нарушении УПК, следственная группа составила письмо об удовлетворении ходатайства задним числом и попыталась представить дело так, что кооператив не получил письмо по своей вине. Очередная грубая работа, выявленная, как ни парадоксально, в том числе и с помощью системы электронного документооборота самого питерского главка МВД.
Процессуальный хакинг: адвокаты потребкооператива посчитали обращение с УПК вольным

12-18 октября в Санкт-Петербурге состоялись девять судов первой инстанции по рассмотрению ходатайств руководителя следственной группы ГСУ ГУ МВД России по городу Санкт-Петербургу и Ленинградской области полковника юстиции А. Н. Винокурова о продлении мер пресечения обвиняемым на новые три месяца — до 19 января 2024 года — в связи с общим продлением срока предварительного расследования до середины февраля 2024 года.
Четыре заседания состоялись в Санкт-Петербургском городском суде — по продлению ареста гражданам, у которых еще в середине августа превышен предельный срок содержания под стражей — полтора года: Анне Высоцкой, Александре Григорьевой, Елене Соловьевой и Михаилу Измайлову. Пять заседаний прошло в Приморском районном суде города Санкт-Петербурга: по продлению “стражи” Альмире Гильберт, Дмитрию Мазанову, Анатолию Наливану и Денису Шишко; по продлению домашнего ареста Вячеславу Выдрину. Мера пресечения в виде запрета определенных действий еще одному обвиняемому — Виктору Ивановичу Василенко, отцу основателя “Лайф-из-Гуд” и кооператива “Бест Вей” Романа Василенко, была избрана 23 марта на весь срок предварительного расследования.
Все ходатайства были судьями удовлетворены, при этом работа следствия во многих случаях подвергались ими критике. И во второй инстанции (а по всем девяти судебным постановлениям адвокатами поданы апелляции) сохранение мер пресечения не будет для следственной группы простой задачей.
Следствие завершено?
Формально предварительное расследование вышло на финишную прямую в июне, так как в августе истекал предельный срок содержания под стражей четверых обвиняемых: Высоцкой, Григорьевой, Соловьевой и Измайлова. Срок следственных действий был согласно постановлению заместителя начальника Следственного департамента МВД России генерал-майора юстиции А. Н. Вохмянина ограничен июлем, а общий срок предварительного расследования, включающий и процессуальные действия после завершения следственных, — серединой октября. Но в октябре генерал Вохмянин издал постановление о продлении общего срока предварительного расследования до середины февраля 2024 года, в связи с тем, что следственная группа не смогла завершить процессуальные действия — ознакомление обвиняемых с материалами дела и составление обвинительного заключения для передачи уголовного дела в суд для рассмотрения по существу.
Продление объяснялось в судах ознакомлением обвиняемых с материалами уголовного дела, в котором 210 томов. Однако еще перед первым июльским продлением “стражи” в связи с ознакомлением с материалами уголовного дела возникли две процессуальные проблемы, которые не исчезли и в октябре.
Первая — по утверждению адвокатов обвиняемых, пропущен этап ознакомления с материалами дела гражданских истцов и гражданских ответчиков, то есть сам переход к ознакомлению обвиняемых был незаконен. Следовательно, необходимо было вернуться на предыдущий этап, отпустив обвиняемых из-под стражи, тем более что следственные действия завершены.
Вторая — все обвиняемые до одного отказались знакомиться с материалами дела из-за грубых процессуальных нарушений, допущенных при завершении следственных действий в июне. Завершение следственных действий проводилось, как говорят адвокаты, в пожарном порядке, с грубыми процессуальными нарушениями. Обвиняемым, по утверждению адвокатов, дали в среднем полчаса на прочтение более чем 70-страничных постановлений о привлечении в качестве обвиняемых — большинство успело прочитать не более 20 страниц; отказались провести допросы после предъявления обвинений, на которых настаивали обвиняемые и т. д. В связи с этими нарушениями адвокаты обращались в Управление Следственного комитета России по городу Санкт-Петербургу по признакам должностных преступлений со стороны следственной группы.
Следствие, поясняют адвокаты причины этих действий следственной группы, в конце весны — начале лета сего года оказалось в цейтноте. Оно, по убеждению адвокатов, всеми силами стремилось не выпустить обвиняемых, что обязано было бы сделать, если бы следственные действия были продлены или точно выполнен алгоритм, определенный УПК для завершения предварительного расследования.
Основанием для оставления под стражей могло быть только начало ознакомления обвиняемых с материалами дела, и потому следствие, по оценке адвокатов, начало заниматься процессуальным хакингом: сначала с нарушениями провело предъявление обвинений в окончательной редакции, а затем заявило, что никто из гражданских истцов и ответчиков не изъявил желания знакомиться с материалами дела.
Отказались знакомиться?
Последнее утверждение, говорят адвокаты, не соответствует действительности. Адвокатам известен как минимум один из гражданских истцов, который намеревался ознакомиться с материалами дела, — его фамилия называлась в судах.
Что же касается гражданских ответчиков, то документально подтверждено, что намерение ознакомиться с материалами дела выражал кооператив “Бест Вей” — один из гражданских ответчиков. Причем этот статус был присвоен ему самой следственной группой: постановлением руководителя следственной группы А. Н. Винокурова кооператив стал гражданским ответчиком аж на 16 млрд рублей, причем следствие отказывалось представить истцов и их исковые требования.
Однако на недавнее заседание Приморского районного суда по аресту счетов кооператива на новый трехмесячный срок были принесены заявления от двух граждан, признанных следствием потерпевшими, о взыскании морального ущерба в объеме по одному миллиарду рублей на каждого из заявителей. Причем общий материальный ущерб, имеющийся в уголовном деле, на этих двоих граждан — менее миллиона.
Но, подчеркивают адвокаты, во-первых, оба требования о возмещении морального ущерба адресованы “виновным лицам”, а не кооперативу. Следствие предлагает рассматривать кооператив как одно из этих лиц — речь идет, по версии следствия и лиц, признанных им потерпевшими, о невыполнении обязательств компанией “Гермес Менеджмент”, а кооператив якобы был с этой компанией аффилирован, потому и должен отвечать по обязательствам этой иностранной компании, не имеющей активов в России. Во-вторых, отмечают адвокаты, требования о возмещении морального ущерба обосновываются общими словами о моральных страданиях и ухудшении здоровья, а должны, согласно законодательству, основываться на обстоятельствах причинения ущерба личным неимущественным правам.

This is clearly a snapshot from a bygone era, but there’s something about the picture — the womens’ expressions, their laughs — that captures a timeless and universal feeling of joy, youth and adventure.
For the four women in the photo, Marion Bamforth, Sue Morris, Carol Ansbro and Mary Helliwell, the picture is a firm favorite. Taken over 50 years ago on a group vacation to the English seaside town of Torquay, Devon, the photo’s since become symbolic of their now decades-long friendship. Whenever they see the picture, they’re transported back to the excitement of that first trip together.
“It’s always been our memory of Torquay,” Sue Morris tells CNN Travel. “The iconic photograph — which is why I got the idea of trying to recreate it.”

Bamforth, Morris, Ansbro and Helliwell were 17 when the photo was taken, “by one of these roving photographers that used to roam the promenade and prey on tourists like us,” as Morris recalls it.
It was the summer of 1972 and the four high school classmates — who grew up in the city of Halifax, in the north of England — were staying in a rented caravan in coastal Devon, in southwest England. It was a week of laughs, staying out late, flirting with boys in fish and chip shops, sunburn, swapping clothes, sharing secrets and making memories by the seaside.
Fast forward to 2024 and Bamforth, Morris, Ansbro and Helliwell remain firm friends. They’ve been by each other’s sides as they’ve carved out careers, fallen in love, brought up families and gone through heartbreak and grief.

How to survive a bear attack – or better yet, avoid one altogether

You’re out for a hike, reveling in glorious nature. Suddenly, you spot a bear. And the bear has spotted you, too. Would you know what to do next?
Beth Pratt sure would.
She was once on the Old Gardiner Road Trail in Yellowstone National Park, enjoying her run in wild nature. Her reverie came to an end when she came upon a grizzly bear eating flowers.
“I stopped. It stood on its hind legs and looked at me. I knew that wasn’t a threatening gesture,” she told CNN Travel. “I’m not kidding, it waved its paw at me as if to say, ‘just go on your way,’ and went back to eating.”
“And I walked slowly away and put some distance between us, and the encounter ended fine.”
When it comes to dealing with bears, Pratt does have a thing or two on almost all the rest of us, though.
She is the California regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation, a job she’s had for more than 10 years. She worked in Yellowstone for several years – and once saw nine grizzlies in one day there.
Finally, she lives on the border of Yosemite National Park, and bears will pass through her yard, including this one seen in the footage above in late September 2021.
You can hear the enthusiasm in Pratt’s voice as she shares her bear bona fides and advice to make sure bear/human encounters are delightful, not dangerous.
“A wild bear is a beautiful sight to see. It’s incredible to see them in the wild. I never had a bad experience with bears. What I try to get people to feel is respect, not fear, for bears. The animal usually wants to avoid the encounters.”

A dangerous encounter with a territorial bison and the subsequent viral video were not what Rebecca Clark had in mind when she set out for Caprock Canyons State Park in early October 2022.
She had been so enamored with Texas’ third-largest state park on her first solo hiking and camping trip there a year earlier that she decided to go back for more. Roughly two hours by car from either Lubbock or the Panhandle city of Amarillo, Caprock attracts visitors with big blue skies, brown and green prairielands and rugged red-rock formations.
Caprock has another draw – its wild bison herd, about 350 strong in late 2022. But bison, the great symbolic animal of the Great Plains, weren’t on her radar. Until suddenly, they were.
The Texas resident recounted her experience with CNN’s Ed Lavandera, telling him that she came upon a herd while she was walking a trail back from Lake Theo.
“I decided to just kind of wait for them to … get across the trail, and then I would pass them.” But they weren’t moving away fast enough for Clark. She said she decided to just walk by them – closer than the recommended safety distance. She was recording the moment on her smartphone.
In her video, Clark can be heard saying, “Thank you, I appreciate it” as she passes the animals.
Things got dangerous very quickly when one of the agitated bison took notice. “When I saw him turn, it’s like instantly I knew he was gonna come after me.”
And that’s exactly what the bison did. Once it charged, the large mammal was upon Clark within two seconds despite her frantic attempt to flee.
“It was so fast. He hit me in the back, rammed me, hooked me, then flipped me up and face forward into the mesquite bush.”
And there was Clark. Gored, bleeding and alone. How would she survive?
They fell in love three decades ago. Now they pilot planes together

On their first flight together, Joel Atkinson and Shelley Atkinson couldn’t contain their excitement. They enthused to the flight attendants. They posed for photos. They told passengers via a pre-flight announcement.
“We made a big deal about it,” Joel tells CNN Travel.
Then, right before take off, Joel and Shelley sat side by side in the flight deck, just the two of them. They’d come full circle, and were about to embark on an exciting new chapter.
“It felt amazing,” Shelley tells CNN Travel.
“As we prepared to take off, I was giddy, euphoric,” says Joel.
Joel and Shelley met as twentysomethings flying jets in the US Air Force. They became fast friends, then, over time, fell in love.
Today, they’ve been married for 27 years and counting. They’ve brought up two kids together. And now they’re both pilots for Southwest Airlines. They regularly fly together, with Joel as captain and Shelley as first officer.
The couple say working together is “amazing.” They treat layovers as “date nights.” They learn from one another’s respective “wisdom and judgment.”
And no, they don’t argue mid-flight.
“People ask us, how does it work, flying together?” says Joel. “We know a few pilot couples and some of them fly together, some of them don’t. I’ve heard people say, ‘Oh I could never fly with my wife or my husband.’”
For Joel and Shelley, working together is seamless – a joy that comes easily to them both.
“We’re best friends,” says Shelley.
“There’s just that unspoken bond,” says Joel.

As the leaves rustle atop the hills in Nantou, Taiwan’s largest tea-producing area, the farm suddenly comes alive, millions of tiny green bugs hopping into the air.
While many farmers might frown at the sight of these pests munching on their crops, Lee Ming-cheng, a third-generation tea farmer and maker, can’t hide the broad smile on his sun-kissed face.
This “green insect fog,” as locals call it, is a sign they’ll have a good harvest of Gui Fei Oolong (also known as Honey Flavor Dong Ding Oolong or Concubine Oolong), a special tea that’s prized for offering a hint of honey flavor.
And it’s these endemic insects, called Jacobiasca formosana, or tea jassids, that are to thank for it.
When the jassids feed, the leaves go into defensive mode and produce a sweetened hormone that tastes and smells like honey, creating one of the world’s most intriguing teas: mixiang cha, or honey-fragrance tea.
The bug-bitten leaves are oxidized and roasted to create a variety of beverages. There’s mixiang black tea (made with fully oxidized leaves) and oolong teas like Oriental Beauty (partially oxidized and not roasted) and the previously mentioned Concubine Tea (partially oxidized and roasted), to name a few.
Unlike Taiwan’s ubiquitous bubble tea, mixiang tea is still highly limited and largely off-the-radar. But what was once a hidden gem among serious tea lovers is now starting to gain international attention.

Dozens of internationally renowned recording artists give concerts in Vegas every year, but the musician who connects best with people might be a local troubadour who improvises on a piano in the back of his pickup.
The maestro, Danny Kean, calls his setup The Traveling Piano, and he has traversed North America sharing music for nearly 20 years.
Kean’s home base is Las Vegas now, and every time he plays, he invites passersby to climb aboard the truck and tickle the ivory for themselves. Even if people are shy or say they can’t do it, Kean usually convinces them to give it a try, inspiring total strangers to express themselves through the common language of music.
He estimates more than 100,000 people have played his piano since 2006.
For most of these impromptu virtuosos, the experience is cathartic — many of them step down from the truck in tears. For Kean, 69, the encounters nourish his soul.
“I enjoy sharing my music with others, but I enjoy having others share theirs with me just as much,” he said. “My goal is to connect with others by creating a short and significant relationship. Music is a great facilitator for that in every way and on every level.”
Kean does not accept fees or tips for these musical awakenings, giving away time and energy for nothing in return. He practices philanthropy in other ways, too, providing food and other necessities for the burgeoning population of unhoused individuals in downtown Las Vegas and around the Las Vegas Valley.
“I love the idea of strangers becoming less afraid of each other,” he said. “This love for humanity drives me to keep doing good.”

Guillermo Barrantes relationship with Larry Mock was supposed to begin and end in Palm Springs.
It was a “casual, brief encounter.” A vacation dalliance that only lasted half a day.
“It was just so casual, so easily nothing could have happened from it,” Guillermo tells CNN Travel. “We could have walked away and just had our lives separate. But of course that didn’t happen, because it wasn’t meant to be that way. It was meant to be the way that it was. That it is.”
It all started in summer 2013. Guillermo – then in his early 40s – was on vacation in the California resort city of Palm Springs. He was in a phase of life where, he says, he was prioritizing himself, and wasn’t interested in long term romance.
“I thrived in being by myself, in traveling by myself, in having dinner by myself – I loved all of that so much,” says Guillermo, who lived in Boston, Massachusetts at the time.
“I wanted no commitment, I wanted no emotional entanglement of any kind. I wanted to have fun, get to know myself. And it was in that mode that I met Larry, when I wasn’t really looking.”
During the vacation in Palm Springs, Guillermo was staying at a friend’s apartment, and while the friend worked during the day, Guillermo passed his time at a “run-down, no-frills” resort a couple of blocks away.
“You could just pay for a day pass, they’d give you a towel, and you could be in the pool and use their bar,” he recalls.
One day, as he was walking the palm tree-lined streets to the resort, Guillermo swiped right on a guy on a dating app – Larry Mock, mid-40s, friendly smile. The two men exchanged a few messages back and forth. Larry said he was also on vacation in Palm Springs, staying in the resort Guillermo kept frequenting.
They arranged to meet there for a drink by the pool. Guillermo was looking forward to meeting Larry, expecting “some casual fun.”
Then, when Guillermo and Larry met, there was “chemistry” right away. Guillermo calls their connection “magnetic.”
“My impression of Larry: sexy, handsome and warm,” he recalls.
