How to Read ‘Game of Thrones’ In Order Martin was inducted into the Medill Hall of Achievement in 2015. In 2021, Northwestern awarded him the honorary title of Doctor of Humane Letters. As fans still wait for George R.R. Martin to complete the Game of Thrones novels, the author offers some frank comments. In his books, he tells tale of queens, kings, dragons, wights, knights and the lands of Westeros, from the icy winter beyond the wall to the deserts of Dorne. He created the characters and stories that made “Game of Thrones” a game-changing TV sensation. Martin published a blog post before “Game of Thrones” aired its final season in which he wrote how “complex and a little sad” it was to be ending the show in its eighth year. The author added, “I wish we had a few more seasons. But I understand… I’m sure some of the actors were signed up for like seven or eight years, and they would like to go on and take other roles. All of that is fair. I’m not angry or anything like that, but there’s a little wistfulness in me.”
